This position performs Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program planning, management, and coordination; infrastructure mapping and database management; and application development work. This position is also responsible for the overall coordination, development, implementation, operation, maintenance, and training related to the City’s GIS.

Job Duties

The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs GIS and infrastructure mapping, database management, GIS application development, user support, and training.
  • Coordinates, develops, implements, operates, and maintains the City’s GIS databases, data layers, software, and systems.
  • Consults with staff from all City departments regarding GIS needs and requirements.
  • Acts as the City’s representative to external agencies, consultants, and the general public regarding their GIS needs.
  • Coordinates, implements, operates, and maintains the City’s Web-based and on-line GIS applications
  • Evaluates, maintains, installs, and upgrades hardware and software for the City’s GIS.
  • Develops and implements training programs, manuals, and provides technical support to internal GIS users and City staff.
  • Establishes data collection format and routines for data input and access for all users of GIS.
  • Analyzes, prepares, and provides maps and reports of GIS data for various City departments and other government and private sector agencies to enable the sharing of geographically related data (e.g. for council agenda items, public meetings, meeting with officials)
  • Supervises, directs, and coordinates the GIS activities of personnel and consultants by assigning work, determining priorities, and coordinating schedules.
  • Oversees related staff activities by providing training, coaching, and technical support as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the formal education, experience and training required.

  • Four-year Bachelor’s Degree in geographic information systems, or related field.
  • Three (3) years of geographic information systems or related experience. Will consider internships, research, part-time work and similar experience towards work experience.
  • Experience using ESRI ArcGIS software programs is desired.
