Civil Engineering Technician
$25.84 to $35.16 per hour, full time. non-exempt
This position performs construction plan development, field data collection, construction staking, and work product inspection; and is responsible for compliance with City codes, State specifications, and contract documents.
We are looking to fill one open position for either an entry level technician or advanced technician. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. The position is open to all candidates with an interest and related experience in civil engineering or municipal construction and the starting wage will be based on education and experience in the civil engineering.
Job Duties:
The essential functions of each position include, but are not limited to the following:
Engineering Technician
- Checks construction operations for compliance with codes and specifications.
- Verifies, measures, and documents contract items that are installed.
- Tests materials used on the jobsite.
- Completes construction diaries and State and Federal forms.
- Assists with the drafting of construction plans.
- Determines, calculates, and documents quantities of bid items.
- Collects, organizes, and documents information for drafting construction plans.
- Drafts and files as-built plans based on documented project quantities and changes.
- Oversees on site work for the City's Sidewalk Replacement Program.
- Assists general public on telephone and in office with questions and issuances of permits.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Engineering Technician Senior
- Performs some of the same work as an Engineering Technician
- Drafts plans for public works projects such as sewer, water, and street improvements.
- Conducts preliminary topography, layout, and staking of construction work and as-built construction topography and plan updates
- Assists public in reading and interpreting maps and improvement plans, and explains assessment plats and schedules.
- Updates and files all improvement plans and maps based on documented project quantities and changes for permanent record keeping of as-built construction plans.
- Maintains flood records and reports flood stages at various points in the city which are necessary for flood fighting operations.
- Performs office work connected with documenting project progress, quantities, and compliance with codes and specifications.
- Performs construction observation including material testing.
- Prepares quantities for pay estimates of public works projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
To perform either position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the formal education, experience and training required.
Engineering Technician Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of experience in civil engineering, municipal construction, or other related experience.
- Possess a driver’s license valid in the state of Minnesota
Engineering Technician Senior Minimum Qualifications
- Four-year Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field and one (1) year of experience; OR
- Associate’s degree or equivalent training at a technical or vocational school with a focus on civil engineering or related field and five (5) years of experience.
- Possess a driver’s license valid in the state of Minnesota
Desired Qualifications:
The requirements listed below are representative of the formal education, experience and training preferred in order to exceptionally perform all of the functions of either position.
- Proficient in computer aided drafting (CAD) specific to Civil3D or current software
- Training in grading and base, concrete field, bituminous field, erosion control site management, and general surveying knowledge
